Western Mindanao Command (WesMinCom) Commander Lt. Gen. Corleto Vinluan, Jr. claimed on Thursday that a member of the Abu Sayyaf Group/kidnap-for-ransom group surrendered to the military in Tawi-Tawi.
“Barri Lakibol, a.k.a. Barley Badeng/Otoh Itom/Robin, 44, married, and a resident of Barangay Silubog, Bongao, Tawi-Tawi, laid down his arms at the headquarters of the Marine Battalion Landing Team 12 in Barangay Nalil, the same municipality on the afternoon of December 23, 2020,” said Vinluan.
“Based on our records, Lakibol was involved in the kidnapping of 21 hostages including European nationals and other foreigners at Sipadan Island in April 2000. He was also involved in the abduction of a certain Father Almeda,” added the WesMinCom commander.
Lt. Col. Henry Espinosa, Commanding Officer of MBLT-12, received the subject personality’s M14 US rifle, one magazine, and two live ammo.
“He identified himself as an ASG/KFRG member who was recruited by Sulu-based senior leader Galib Andang, a.k.a. Commander Robot sometime in January 2000,” reiterated Espinosa.
During the debriefing, Lakibol stated that he abandoned the group in 2006 as a result of the military’s escalated offensives in Sulu, which resulted in the neutralization of important ASG figures.
“The surrendered personality will be turned over to the local government unit of Bongao for his enrolment to the reintegration programs of the government,” said Col. Arturo Rojas, Commander of the Joint Task Force Tawi-Tawi.
“We are looking forward to more enemy surrenders and we encourage them to do so as it is best that they peacefully return to the mainstream society rather than engage in gunfights” Rojas added.
