Last July 31, the Commanding Officer of the Philippine Army’s 53rd Infantry “Matapat” Battalion (53IB) reviewed the National Housing Authority’s (NHA) 20-million, 100-unit housing project for the Subanen Indigenous Peoples (IPs) in the remote barrio of Sunop in Dumingag town, Zamboanga del Sur.

The NHA, in collaboration with the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP), started the housing project on November 11, 2019 after Barangay Sunop was declared free from communist terrorist influence in April 2019.

The NCIP shall protect and promote the interest and well-being of the ICCs/IPs with due regard to their beliefs, customs, traditions and institutions.
