4 more BIFF members surrenders to Philippine Army troopers in Maguindanao

Four more members of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) were apprehended by the Joint Task Force Central in Maguindanao on Wednesday (August 18, 2021).

According to Lt. Gen. Corleto Vinluan, Jr., Commander of Western Mindanao Command, the surrendered individuals go by the aliases: Ustadz, Kano, Magdusa, and Abu Zubair surrendered to the 92nd Infantry Battalion in Barangay Tuayan Mother, Datu Hoffer Ampatuan, Maguindanao.

The seized persons, who are members of the Karialan Faction, gave up two M1 Garand rifles, one M16A1 rifle, and one Ultimax light machine gun, according to Lt. Col. Nathaniel Balintong, Battalion Commander of 92IB.

Brig. Gen. Ignatius Patrimonio, Commander of the 1st Brigade Combat Team, and the local chief executives of Shariff Aguak and Datu Hoffer Ampatuan, all of Maguindanao, were presented with the four.

Brig. Gen. Patrimonio stated that the military is stepping up its attempts to persuade more militants to lay down their weapons and return to society.

Meanwhile, Maj. Gen. Juvymax Uy, Commander of JTF Central, praised the military, local government units, and communities for their coordinated efforts, which resulted in a jump in the number of BIFF individuals surrendering.

On August 7, 13 members of the same group surrendered in Sultan Kudarat, while 11 others put down their arms on August 13 in Shariff Aguak, Maguindanao.

“The series of surrenders only proves that the security landscape in central Mindanao is indeed changing,” said Lt. Gen. Vinluan, Jr.

A total of 170 BIFF personalities have been neutralized since January 2021, with 69 being slain, 98 surrendering, and three being arrested.

“Rest assured that all those who returned peacefully to the fold of the law will be completely mainstreamed to their respective communities,” Lt. Gen. Vinluan further stated.

Surrendered individuals are currently undergoing custodial debriefing by the 1BCT, while their firearms have been safely deposited at the 92IB headquarters.
