The Wounded Personnel Medal was pinned to Pfc. John Mark P. Grande of the 97th Infantry Battalion on Thursday (August 19, 2021) at the Kuta Major Cesar L Sang-an Station Hospital by Maj. Gen. Gene M. Ponio, the 1st Infantry Division Commander.

After an incident with more than 12 members of the communist terrorist group (CTG) on Wednesday, August 18, at Purok 4, Bagumbayan, Sergio Osmea Sr., Zamboanga del Norte, two 97IB troops were wounded.

Personnel who were wounded in battle against a country’s foe or as a direct result of an enemy act, as well as those who exhibited bravery, professionalism, and heroism in the discharge of their duty, are awarded the Wounded Personnel Medal.

This was the same armed communist terrorist group that the 97IB and 42IB forces engaged on July 4, July 30, and August 10 in a recent clash in which a CAA was injured.

The other wounded service member, who was shot in the left leg, is being treated at the Zamboanga del Norte Provincial Hospital in Dipolog City while waiting for the results of his X-ray.

According to Lt. Col. Manaros Boransing, the 97IB Commander, the battalion is now conducting pursuit operations against the CTG until they are fully annihilated.

Meanwhile, Maj. Gen. Ponio praised Pfc. Grande’s bravery, as well as that of the whole 97th and 42nd Infantry Battalion personnel, for willingly risking their lives to bring peace and stability to Zamboanga del Norte.
