The Indonesian shipbuilder North Sea Boats (PT Lundin Industry) has launched the second Klewang-class stealth trimaran fast attack craft being built for the Indonesian Navy (TNI-AL).

The ship, which will become the future KRI Golok (688) once commissioned with the TNI-AL, was based on North Sea Boat’s X3K wave-piercing stealth catamaran design, and was launched on 21 August 2021 at North Sea Boat’s shipbuilding facility in Banyuwangi, East Java.

During the naming and launching ceremonies, TNI-AL Chief of Staff Admiral Yudo Margono was present.

The ship was designed to replace the Klewang (625), the class’s first ship, which was destroyed by fire before being commissioned to the TNI-AL in 2012.

North Sea Boats has improved the ship design and materials used in construction as a result of the destruction of the Klewang, which now include a carbon fiber composite that is supposed to be fire resistant.

The use of composite materials for the hull construction allows for a high specific strength, light weight, and excellent fatigue-resistance and corrosion-resistance.

The ship is 63 meters long, 16 meters wide at its widest point, 245 tons in displacement, and has a crew of 30 officers and sailors.

It has four 1,800-horsepower MAP V12 diesel engines that allow it to reach speeds of more than 28 knots, cruise at 16 knots, and have a maximum range of 2,000 nautical miles at 16 knots.

In 2019, PT Lundin and Saab agreed to supply the original boat’s combat systems, sensors, and weaponry, but it’s unclear whether this will continue with the second ship in the class.

The ship will be armed with a 30mm autocannon and 12.7mm heavy machine guns, as well as an 11-meter rigid-hull inflatable boat (RHIB) as standard equipment, according to reports.
