The Army’s 4th Infantry Division (4ID) verified the death of a New People’s Army (NPA) rebel in Gingoog City, Misamis Oriental, following a firefight on Sunday, August 28, 2021.
According to Maj. Francisco Garello, 4ID Public Affairs Office chief, the NPA guerrilla’s body was discovered by the 42nd Division Reconnaissance Company (42DRC) under the operational responsibility of the 58th Infantry Battalion (58IB) of the 402nd Infantry Brigade at 5:30 AM on Sunday.
“Troops are still conducting pursuit operations against fleeing CNTs (Communist Party of the Philippines-NPA Terrorists),” the 4ID statement read.
The encounter began late Saturday afternoon at Barangay Lawaan’s Sitio Dumagook.
The 42DRC battled with ten rebels alleged to be members of the North Central Mindanao Regional Command’s Sub-regional Sentro De Gravidad MTJ Eagles.
According to the 58IB report, two M16 and one M14 rifles were seized during the 25-minute gunfight.
On the government’s side, no casualties were reported.
The 4ID commander, Maj. Gen. Romeo S. Brawner Jr, commended government soldiers for facilitating recent surrenders that yielded 10 firearms as well as Saturday’s confrontation.
“These accomplishments are results of careful planning and strategy borne out from good intelligence, and the flawless execution of competent and capable leaders and soldiers. Congratulations to 42nd DRC and the 58th IB,” Brawner said in a statement.
Since January of this year, there have been 131 clashes between the 4ID troops and the insurgents, with 342 NPA militants neutralized (35 killed, 63 detained, and 168 combatants and 76 Militia ng Bayan induced to surrender).
The Communist Party of the Philippines-NPA has also lost support from 1,123 members of clandestine mass organizations operating under the 4ID jurisdiction.
The United States, European Union, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the Philippines have all designated the CPP-NPA as a terrorist group.
