The Philippine National Police (PNP) has committed to continue the successes made in combating criminality and illegal drugs throughout the Duterte administration.

This comes after Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) Secretary Martin Andanar stated that the country’s peace and order situation has improved under President Rodrigo Duterte’s leadership.

“We welcome the statement made by Secretary Andanar,” PNP chief Gen. Guillermo Eleazar said in a statement.

Eleazar stated that the PNP data and public perception supported the development of peace and order “because they experienced it in the last five years.”

“The challenge now is how to sustain it and this is the reason why we keep on implementing aggressive reforms and security adjustments to continuously deny criminal elements and other threat groups from preying on our kababayan. The PNP vows to sustain the gains made by this administration in achieving peace and order in the society. Hindi naming ito sasayangin,” he added.

Andanar claimed that since Duterte entered office, the country’s crime rate has dropped by at least 64%, with increased efforts against criminality and illegal substances helping to achieve this goal.

The PNP has long claimed that the majority of crimes in the country are linked to the use of illegal narcotics. This was demonstrated by a sharp drop in crime after strong anti-illegal narcotics operations began in July 2016.

Eleazar stated that the organization’s mission of safeguarding the public from illegal individuals will continue, and that this included vigorous internal cleansing as part of the Intensified Cleanliness Policy.

After Duterte took office, a total of 5,240 erring police officers have been fired, with 163 of them being fired since Eleazar was named as Chief of the Philippine National Police on May 8 this year.

He also urged the public to join forces with authorities in order to achieve the aim of a peaceful society devoid of horrors.

“Sa ngayon, hindi lamang peace and order ang aming tinututukan dahil patuloy kaming magiging kabahagi sa layunin ng ating pamahalaan laban sa Covid-19 sa gitna ng patuloy na pagtaas ng mga kaso sa mga nakalipas na araw,” Eleazar said.
