After conducting airstrikes against the insurgents, the military uncovered a New People’s Army (NPA) bunker in Barangay Dungeg, Sta. Teresita, Cagayan, where the rebels had been manufacturing anti-personnel mines.

According to Maj. Jekyll Dulawan, a spokesperson for the 5th Infantry Division (5ID), troops on a reconnaissance patrol encountered about 40 NPA fighters, resulting in a gunbattle and military airstrikes.

Soldiers were protected from counter-fires and anti-personnel mines purportedly planted by insurgents, he added, with close air and fire support.

The military sustained no casualties, but the rebels may have been injured, according to Dulawan.

The discovered hideout and explosive manufacturing site belongs to rebels under the NPA’s Komiteng Rehiyon-Cagayan Valley.
