2 NPA fighters killed in Surigao Sur clash — 36IB

According to the Cantilan Municipal Police Station, two New People’s Army (NPA) insurgents were killed in an encounter in Surigao del Sur on Tuesday, September 21, 2021.

The conflict occurred at 5 PM in the mountainous terrain of Sitio Agsam, Barangay Cabas-an in Cantilan.

“The 36th Infantry Battalion (36IB) of the Army informed this police station that their troops were conducting combat operations in the area when they encountered around 10 members of Communist Terrorist Group,” the local police said.

The rebels are members of Guerrilla Front 30, the NPA’s North Eastern Mindanao Regional Committee, which is led by Alias Mega.

The rebels scurried out from their position after the 10-minute skirmish, leaving two of their wounded compatriots behind.

The 36IB troops transported the wounded rebels to Madrid District Hospital in Madrid, but the attending physician declared them dead.

Authorities are still trying to figure out who the slain rebels are, with the support of local officials in the area.

The fight occurred barely hours after a separate incident in Tago, Surigao del Sur on Tuesday afternoon, which resulted in the killing of an NPA rebel and the seizure of high-capacity rifles, ammo, and explosives.

The United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the Philippines have all designated the Communist Party of the Philippines-NPA as a terrorist group.
