During one of their regular inspections of fishing vessels while operating in the country’s Exclusive Economic Zone about 70 nautical miles (112 kilometers) east of Davao Oriental on Monday, November 8, 2021, LTJG Aira Aguilar PN of BRP Andres Bonifacio (PS17) was seen giving early Christmas presents to a group of fishermen in the spirit of the yuletide season.

The Philippines is one of the world’s top fish producers, as it is located in a region with the richest marine biodiversity. The sustainable fisheries sector, which plays a significant role in the lives and livelihoods of Filipinos, is the primary factor in the development, management, and protection of fisheries and aquatic resources. To achieve food security, the sustainable fisheries industry requires the dedication and active participation of all industry stakeholders, including the security sector.

Philippine Navy ships, operating in support of the AFP’s Unified Commands’ mission, undertake regular sovereignty patrols and maintain a continuous maritime presence to safeguard Filipino fishermen and aid the government in guaranteeing sustainable fishing.

PS17 is a high-endurance patrol ship of the Philippine Fleet that patrols the country’s territorial waters, including the Exclusive Economic Zone, under the operational supervision of Naval Task Force 71 of Naval Forces Eastern Mindanao, Eastern Mindanao Command, AFP.
