A top military field commander has pledged to hunt down any remaining New People’s Army (NPA) rebels planning to cause chaos in Zamboanga del Sur’s hinterlands.
The statement was released by Lieutenant Colonel Jo-ar Herrera, commander of the 53rd Infantry Battalion, after troops from the battalion battled with NPA rebels on two different occasions in Zamboanga del Sur on Saturday, November 20, 2021.
The initial clash took place on November 18 between Sitio Ditalipon in Dilud village, Dumingag, Zamboanga del Sur, and Sitio Kusingan in Tinago village, Sergio Osmeña, Zamboanga del Norte.
The second altercation took place in Purok 2, Saad, Dumingag village on Friday, November 19.
As the soldiers outmaneuvered the NPA insurgents, they scurried in different directions.
“We will be firm in keeping the peace here in Dumingag. We will be relentless, and we will hit them hard, just to keep the people safe,” said Herrera.
The troops found one M16A1 rifle with magazine and ammunition, as well as personal belongings, medical supplies, a portable burner, and hygiene kits that the NPA had left behind when they fled in different directions.
