The Philippine Army’s 53rd Infantry “Matapat” Battalion (53IB) officially opened the Matapat Community Firing Range on Wednesday, December 1, in a simple inauguration and riboon-cutting ceremony at 53IB Headquarters in Poblacion, Guipos, Zamboanga del Sur, graced by the Army’s 1st Infantry (TABAK) Division Commander Maj. Gen. Gene Ponio.

The Matapat Community Firing Range is a seven-bay shooting range created with the noble goal of continuing partnership and enduring commitment for peace and development in Zamboanga del Sur as a location for polishing marksmanship and competence skills in shooting.

Lt. Col. Jo-ar Herrera, 53IB Commanding Officer, thanked Maj. Gen. Gene Ponio for attending the momentous ceremony and showed gratitude to 53IB’s partner stakeholders in his welcome remarks.

“This Matapat Community Firing Range is built through the support and trust of 53IB’s valued partner stakeholders, to whom we will forever be grateful,” said Lt. Col. Herrera.

Maj. Gen. Ponio praised 53IB for its successful collaboration and convergence with its partner stakeholders, adding it is critical to keeping the province safe from numerous threats.

This action is part of the 53IB’s effort to strategically articulate the Army’s transformation into a world-class force that will be a source of national pride by 2028, as outlined in the Army Transformation Roadmap (ATR).
