At around 10:15 AM on Wednesday, communist New People’s Army (NPA) rebels attacked a preemptive evacuation conducted by government troops in Barangay Cancavan, Carmen, Surigao del Sur, injuring two civilians and four army troopers.

Col. Joseph Boquiren, Director of the Surigao del Sur Police Provincial Office (SDSPPO), told on Thursday that the two civilians and four Army troops are presently in stable condition following medical treatment at the Madrid District Hospital.

“The troopers of 36th Infantry Battalion (36IB) were part of the preemptive evacuation team dispatched in the area to secure the residents from the possible impacts of Typhoon Odette,” Boquiren said.

The 36IB troops managed to position themselves to defend the other citizens in the vicinity, resulting in an instant encounter, he continued.

He further mentioned that police officers from Madrid assisted the troops by putting up roadblocks.

“The undetermined number of attackers belonged to Guerrilla Front 30 of the North Eastern Mindanao Regional Committee of the NPA and was led by Alias Megan,” Boquiren said.

Despite the incident, Boquiren stated that the SDSPPO, as well as the various stations and police units in the area, will continue to assist with the continuing Typhoon Odette evacuations.

“Our priority now is to provide support to evacuations and rescue operations. Our manpower and resources are on standby and ready to respond in emergency calls,” Boquiren said.
