Last week, the Philippine Navy met virtually with the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) for a formal discussion and briefing on Project BUHAWI, a joint project between the two agencies aimed at improving the former’s Self-Reliant Defense Posture program.

Vice Admiral Adeluis S. Bordado PN, the PN Flag Officer-in-Command, and DOST Secretary Fortunato T. Dela Peña attended the meeting. The ongoing project efforts, including the formal turnover goal date and technology transfer operations, were all discussed.

Leaders from the Philippine Navy’s Headquarters, Naval Sea Systems Command, Naval Research and Technology Development Center (NRTDC), and DOST’s Metals Industry Research and Development Center were also in attendance.

During the discussion, NRTDC highlighted the completed efforts since the project’s inception in 2019 and its current efficiency state based on many test firings conducted in December 2021, as well as the project’s current efficiency status.

“This is the biggest that (DOST) have undertaken in defense establishment. We just want to prove that with the little investments that we have, we can come up with something significant,” said Sec. Dela Peña.

In a similar vein, VAdm Bordado stressed the importance of PN’s research and development activities in achieving its goals.

“In order to have a strong, modern, and multi-capable Navy, we should have strong research and development efforts and activities,” said VAdm Bordado.

Project BUHAWI, according to the PN chief, will help to strengthen marine defense capabilities.

Sec. de la Peña called for a DOST-PN team effort, “let us strengthen our collaboration”, he closed assuring that they will continue to work hand-in-hand with the Philippine Navy.

Project BUHAWI is now at its fourth and final phase.
