BRP Ivatan (LC298), a Philippine Navy landing craft, undertook another successful delivery operation of relief goods from Manila via BRP Tarlac (LD601), considerably assisting government agencies and private organizations such as the Naval Reserve Center – Eastern Visayas.
It allowed the Civil Military Operations Unit Central and Headquarters Naval Forces Central to deliver donations that had been organized and categorized immediately. The relief donations are expected to be worth P3,126,000.
Construction materials and non-food products such as generators, solar devices, folding and cube tents, plywood, nails, and plain metal sheets made up the majority of the cargo, which weighed a total of 57 tons. The supplies will be used to repair and construct temporary shelters for local residents of Siargao Island, who are currently witnessing a surge in diarrhea cases.
Despite the island’s wrecked telecommunications, electricity, and infrastructure, the BRP Ivatan, together with other naval and commercial vessels, was able to convey relief supplies, enabling for an ongoing flow of support to the island’s relief and rehabilitation efforts.
The construction materials were gratefully accepted by the Siargao local government unit. With around 45,000 evacuees still living in evacuation centers following Typhoon Odette’s havoc, construction supplies are critical for the construction of new temporary shelters to relieve the overcrowding in the evacuation centers.
The Visayas Command, through Naval Forces Central, is working together with local governments and other stakeholders to provide timely, responsive, and effective assistance to areas impacted by Typhoon Odette.
