The Peace, Law Enforcement, and Development Support (PLEDS) Teams inspect the ongoing concreting of Farm-to-Market Roads in Barangays Bagumbayan and Nazareth of Sergio Osmeña Sr., Zamboanga del Norte.
According to Lt. Col. Nolasco Coderos Jr., commanding officer of the 97th Infantry Battalion, the two barangays are beneficiaries of the P20 million Barangay Development Program (BDP) fund provided by the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict.
In the municipality of Sergio Osmeña Sr., the PLEDS Teams from the 97IB and the Zamboanga del Norte Provincial Police Office serve as sustainment teams in support of the government’s Retooled Community Support Program, which aims to protect cleared barangays from the communist terrorist group’s possible reemergence.
The 102nd Infantry Brigade Commander, Brig. Gen. Leonel Nicolas, emphasizes the importance of the projects in offering long-term answers to the province’s root causes of insurgency, which will eventually improve the lives of its people.
“We are now at the final stage for the total defeat of the Western Mindanao Regional Party Committee as their strength is now dwindling. The protection of these projects is an integral part of our campaign to ensure peace and promote development in the entire Zamboanga Peninsula,” Nicolas added.
The BDP is the flagship project of the NTF-ELCAC that aims to bring development to identified barangays formerly established as guerilla fronts of the CPP-NPA-NDF.
