Operating troops of the Philippine Army’s 36th Infantry Battalion under the 901st Infantry Brigade of the 4th Infantry Division foiled a communist NPA terrorist (CNT) extortion attempt as they encountered the armed group in Barangay San Vicente, Carmen, Surigao del Sur on March 29, 2022.
According to Lt. Col. Michael Rey S Reuyan, Commanding Officer of 36IB, a concerned resident reported the presence of the armed group in the hinterlands of Barangay San Vicente extorting food and money from the farmers, which prompted the 36IB to launch the security operation.
“While approaching the location of the armed group, the troops clashed with about 15 CNTs under Alias Megan of Platoon 2, Guerilla Front 30, North Eastern Mindanao Regional Committee (NEMRC). The firefight lasted for about 15 minutes, after which the NPAs withdrew in different directions,” Lt. Col. Reuyan said.
The soldiers seized from the encounter site one M16 rifle, one carbine rifle, one cal. 22 rifle, one cal 45 pistol, four anti-personnel mines (APM), 12 detonating cords and blasting caps, several 7.62 and 5.56 ammunition, other war materials, subversive documents, and some medical supplies.
AFP Chief of Staff General Andres C Centino has directed units on the ground to intensify focused military operations against the communist terrorist group (CTG) and local terrorist groups (LTGs) so the enemy can no longer threaten civilians.
“As we address the threat brought by the CTGs and LTGs, we are also complying with our Commander-in-Chief’s order to ensure a secure, accurate, and free election 2022,” Gen. Centino said.
