12 Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) members voluntarily surrendered to the Joint Task Force (JTF) Sulu at the Headquarters of the 1101st Infantry Brigade in Sitio Samak, Bud Bayug, Talipao, Sulu on June 10, 2022.

“The ASG returnees brought with them five M16 rifles, two M1 Garand rifles, two M203 grenade launchers, one .45 cal pistol, and one 9mm cal pistol. The surrendered firearms are now under the custody of the 1101st Infantry Brigade for proper disposition,” said Deputy Commander of Joint Task Force (JTF) Sulu Brig. Gen. Antonio I. Bautista Jr.

During the interview, a.k.a Tex narrated that he had been with the group of ASG senior leader Radullan Sahiron since 1999 to 2019. For his time with the ASG terrorist, he had realized that his life has no direction, no peace and sure demise would only be the end result of life without meaning. Tired of always being on the run, often experienced starvation and longing for his family prompted him to go back to the folds of the law.

According to 1101st Bde Commander Brig. Gen. Eugenio Boquio, the continuous effort of the troops of 41st Infantry Battalion led by Lt.Col. Erasmus James Gagni and 2nd Special Forces led by Lt.Col. Benito Ramos with their active engagements to the community, have been able to convinced the ASG members to surrender and avail the government’s program.

Meanwhile, JTF Sulu Commander Maj. Gen. Ignatius N. Patrimonio lauded the commitment of the troops of their efforts in assisting the ASG members to go back to the folds of the law.

“Another 12 ASG members laid down their arms and realized their useless cause. Since 2017, the JTF Sulu recorded a total of 823 ASG returnees,” said Maj. Gen. Patrimonio.

“The influx of ASG returnees is an indicative of our successful peace and security campaign in Sulu. Let us therefore continue our concerted efforts to finally end terrorism”, added by JTF Sulu Commander.

In a closing statement, Maj. Gen. Patrimonio once again appealed to the remaining ASG to lay down their firearms, be with their families, avail the government’s Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program (E-CLIP), and live a normal and peaceful life.

Since January this year, a total of 65 ASG members voluntarily surrendered to JTF Sulu bringing along with them 42 high-powered firearms and 11 low-powered firearms. — PA
