ASG Members Killed, Yields Firearm during Military’s Clash in Sulu

Sulu Province – The operating troops of 21st Infantry Battalion under 1101st Infantry Brigade of the 11th Infantry Division clashed with the elements of Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) at Sitio Tubig Paliya, Barangay Danag, Patikul, Sulu around 10:44 in the morning, today, 16 May, 2020.

The government troops engaged with twenty (20) fully armed ASG bandits led by sub-group leader Ellam Nasirin in a firefight that forced the bandits to retreat.

Another combat group under 21st Infantry Battalion likewise battled in a one-hour encounter with the same group of ASG in the said barangay following the recent clash. The ASG thereafter retreated and ran towards different directions.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Gerald L. Monfort, Commanding Officer of 21st Infantry Battalion, the clash resulted in the death of an ASG member and the recoveries of one (1) assault rifle, cellphones, ammunition magazines, food packs, bandoliers, personal items, war materiels and other subversive documents while one of the troops suffered minor injury.

The wounded soldier was immediately brought to Kuta Heneral Teodulfo Bautista Station Hospital for further treatment together with the cadaver of the ASG for proper disposition.

Moreover, said clash was credited to the collaborative peace efforts of the community, local government units, stakeholders and armed forces. Recently, Lieutenant Colonel Monfort facilitated a peace forum headed by Patikul Mayor Kabir E. Hayudini together with Barangay Chairman Hji Barri H. Ukang and Religious Leader Ustadz Kaber at Barangay Danag, Patikul, Sulu on May 11, 2020. Said local officials committed to help end local terrorism in the Province.

Meanwhile, more troops are now on pursuit to track the confronted group. Brigadier General Antonio G. Nafarrete, Commander of 1101st Infantry Brigade assured that the military is on top of the situation. “We will pursue to eradicate the ASG to secure peace and order for the people of Sulu,” he said.

“Further report stated that two other ASG members were killed and the group suffered numerous casualties during the clash,” Brigadier General Nafarrete added.

Major General Corleto S. Vinluan Jr., AFP, Commander of 11th Infantry Division assured to eradicate the fleeing bandits by pursuing military operations to secure peace and order in Sulu. “We will not seize the momentum for these bandits to regain chances of creating another terroristic act. We will eliminate the ASG for peace and development of Sulu to prosper,” he said.
